What Exactly is a Murphy Bed?
The Murphy Bed is not a new concept and is once again gaining popularity.
It was in 1900 that William L. Murphy, a single man, invented the Murphy
Bed because his sleeping quarters was also the same place in which he
entertained women. Back in 1900, it wasn't appropriate to entertain
a woman in the bedroom, so he had to come up with a solution.
For those who are not familiar with the Murphy Bed, it is a bed that flips
up on its end into a closet. It stores completely out of sight, which
is very handy for bedrooms with limited space or for apartments in which
the living quarters are rather small.
It was in the 1920s that Murphy moved his business to New York and the
business remains there today. The business was flourishing because of
the increase in apartment dwellers. Many of the original beds in New York
City apartments are still there, so if you visit a New York City apartment
that was in existence at the time Murphy moved his business to New York
and the beds were being installed within these apartments, you just might
encounter an original Murphy Bed.
Now, the concept is finding its way into apartments once again where space
is a necessity. There is no better way to make space within a bedroom
than to install a Murphy Bed that can simply be folded into a closet.
That will clear up a considerable amount of room and make the apartment
seem bigger.
