Most of us only buy two or three beds for ourselves in our lifetime. That means that each time you start looking for new beds, you have to start from scratch - what do you look for and what do you need to know?

1. Measure up

It's really important that you take some measurements before you go shopping. If you already have a standard double bed in your room, you'll know that it fits. If you'd like to move up to a king or superking, you need to make sure that it will fit. Remember that you may also need to fit bedside tables next to your bed and that you'll need room to walk around the bed. In addition to your bedroom, you'll also need to make sure that your bed can be delivered to your room - measure the widths of doors and look at turns on staircases, for example.

2. Choose a style

Take a look at magazines and interior design shows to get an idea of the styles available and how they will fit into your room. Decide whether you'd prefer a divan with storage, for example, or a feature four-poster. Choose a bed that fits in with the style and period of your home - unless you have the design flair to make something unusual fit in.

3. Try them out

You must take the time to try out some beds. You can't realistically expect to be comfortable for the next 10 years in a bed you've only ever sat on. Kick off your shoes and lie down on several beds so that you can see if the bed base is big enough and the mattress is comfortable and supportive.

4. Look for deals

Don't just buy the first bed you see. Make a note of the maker and range of the beds and mattresses you're interested in, then compare prices from a number of retailers - both in-store and online - to see where you can get the best price.

5. Look after your bed

Once you've chosen your bed and had it delivered, make sure you look after it. A well-maintained and cared-for bed will last for many years and will also continue to give you the support you need.
