Beds - taken for granted?
We only really notice our beds when there's something wrong with them.
Your bed is one of the most important pieces of furniture in your home,
yet it's easy to take it for granted. Always there when we need
it, it's the place we turn to when we're tired, ill or just
need some peace and quiet, and for many people, it provides an oasis away
from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Whether you're packing
a suitcase on top of it or hiding Christmas presents under it, your bed
is a constant, but often ignored, part of your life.
Why our beds are important
Without good quality sleep, we just can't function properly. Our
bodies need time to reinforce what we've learned or experienced
during the day and to prepare us for the day ahead. Experts recommend
that children, including teenagers, get at least 10 hours sleep every
night, and adults require about 8 hours. Failing to get the good sleep
we need makes us irritable and reduces our concentration, which in turn
can have a knock-on effect at work, school and home. A good bed and a
supportive mattress are key to the quality of sleep we get - which
is why we shouldn't forget the important role that beds play in
our lives.
Don't take your bed for granted
Remember how important it is to look after your bed. If you have care
instructions, follow them so that you get the most out of your bed and
mattress. Protect your bed from damage by not using it as an extra storage
surface and not allowing children or animals to bounce and play on it.
Turn your mattress so that you're using it evenly, and watch out
for the tell-tale signs that your bed or mattress are coming to the end
of their useful lives - sagging mattresses, protruding springs or
coils, stained fabric or damaged bases are all signs that you need to
start looking at new beds.
