Beds - traditional designs
Many people are still attracted by beds with a traditional design.
With the current trend for complementing your period home with period
furniture, or just using traditional designs to create a particular look
in your bedroom, it's no wonder that traditional-style beds are
so popular. From four-poster beds to wrought-iron bedsteads, we like the
style and appearance of these designs.
Wrought iron bedsteads
Wrought iron beds usually have a headboard and a baseboard, making them
look self-contained. The nature of wrought iron means that the beds can
be as plain or decorative as desired, with patterns ranging from simple
columns to intricate knots. The nature of the design work means that the
bed doesn't look too cumbersome, although the bed is clearly the
centrepiece of the room. These beds, with either natural or painted ironwork,
work well in Victorian and Edwardian-styled rooms.
Four-poster beds
Recognised today as the bed for romantics, the four-poster bed has been
popular in Britain since the thirteenth century. During times when the
bed was the ultimate expression of stature and wealth, four posters had
elaborate canopies, drapes and covers. Today's four-poster beds
still evoke the mystery and luxury of earlier centuries whilst taking
advantage of new fabrics and designs to complement a more contemporary
décor.
Wooden beds
We still love the look and feel of wood. From Walnut to Beech, we can
find a wood grain and colour that fits with our design ideas. Today, we
can buy beds in all types of wood and in many styles. The traditional
wooden bed, however, is still a popular choice with consumers. Antique
and reproduction sleigh beds, with their solid frames and curving lines
are attractive and always look good. The mixture of wood and fabric as
seen on the head and baseboards of reproduction French beds, along with
intricate carving or fretwork are also very desirable.
