Beds and bedding

Once you've bought your bed, you'll need to think about bedding.

For many people, the way your bed looks and feels is as important as how comfortable it is to sleep in. Whilst some of us get too warm in bed and prefer light cotton sheets and low-tog duvets, others like blankets, throws and warm jersey bedding to keep them cosy.

Whatever bedding you choose, you first need to have a good bed to put it on. It doesn't matter how beautiful your bed linen is if your bed is uncomfortable; you will still end up with aches and pains, and interrupted sleep.

When you're choosing your new bed, make sure you're choosing it for the support it provides as well as the way it looks. Whilst you may want a reproduction French bed to complement your other furniture, or a modern leather bed for your contemporary apartment, there's no point just choosing your bed for style alone.

Choosing bedding

Once you've bought a suitable bed, you'll probably want to buy new bedding too. The first thing to do is make sure that you're buying the right size bedding for your new bed. If you've previously had a standard double bed and you've just bought a king size, you'll find that your duvet won't be big enough and you certainly won't be able to get your sheets to fit. You'll need to buy king size bedding to ensure that you and your partner have enough bedding at night time.

Design experts are often telling us how to "dress" our beds. Classic colours and fabrics are matched with contemporary throws, bedspreads and cushions to create a cosy, welcoming sleeping space. If you can afford to, it's worth buying the best bedding you can. Good sheets and covers last longer than cheaper ones and maintain their looks over time.

To iron or not to iron?

Some people iron all their bedding; others just do pillow cases and some take bedding straight out of the tumble drier or off the line and put it back on the bed. Ironing your bedding is a personal choice that's often partly dictated by time and energy. In general, though, the more care you take over your bed linen, the better value it will give you.
