Beds and safety
When you're buying a new bed, make sure that you're choosing one that
complies with current safety standards.
There are several different standards that apply to the design, manufacture
and care of beds and mattresses. Some of these standards can be legally
enforced, and manufacturers must ensure that their products conform to
the latest requirements.
Legislation
Government passes legislation all the time, most of which we never hear
about. In many cases, the legislation is brought in to control the manufacture
or production of general consumer items. Current legislation that affects
the beds and mattress industry include the Bunk Beds (Entrapment Hazards)(Safety)
Regulations 1987 S1 1987/1337, which cover the way that bunk beds are
designed and built. In particular, it covers gaps in construction which
could be dangerous for small children. This legislation applies to pre-assembled
bunk beds and flat-packed bunks.
The British Standards Institute
The BSI provides business services to companies around the world. It formulates
national and international standards for a wide variety of industries,
undertakes product testing and provides training and general information.
The BSI produces and manages hundreds of standards, which companies can
adopt in order to show that their products are meeting a nationally-recognised
quality level. These standards help to give customers confidence in the
product and allows them to compare products from different manufacturers.
Whilst British Standards are not legally binding, they are an indication
of excellence or best practice. Current British Standards that apply to
beds include BS6807:2006 which covers the testing of mattresses, upholstered
divans, and upholstered beds for ignitability - how quickly they
catch fire. The standard includes testing various methods of ignition,
including "progressive smouldering ignition", such as an unattended
cigarette.
Trading Standards
Each council has a trading standards department which is responsible for
ensuring that manufacturers and retailers maintain legal and professional
standards in their dealings with consumers. If you have had a problem
with a retailer that supplies beds or mattresses, go to your local trading
standards office for advice.
