Beds for allergy sufferers
Are there beds that can help allergies?
Many thousands of people, young and old, suffer from allergies that can
be caused by the dust and other allergens in and around our beds. If you're
buying a new bed, take precautions now to stop house dust mites from congregating
in your mattress.
The common dust mite lives in your mattress and feeds on the skin cells
you shed and the moisture you use in bed. Aside from exacerbating existing
allergies, the dust mite, its droppings and mould can cause:
• Congestion
• Coughing
• Tight, asthmatic chests
• Watery eyes
• Headaches
• Runny nose
• Disturbed sleep
It's important then, that you look at ways to reduce the presence
of dust mites and other microscopic bugs and bacteria by looking after
your bed:
Follow the care instructions
Beds and mattresses come with care instructions. From the way you clean
your bed to turning your mattress regularly; ongoing care can help to
reduce the number of allergens in your bedrooms.
Buy and underblanket
You can buy anti-allergy underblankets for most sizes of beds. These blankets
contain a special fibre that helps to prevent your mattress providing
the conditions that dust mites thrive on. Putting one of these blankets
between your mattress and your sheet will reduce the likelihood of dust
mites getting to you.
Clean bedding regularly
It's not just bedding that needs regular cleaning and changing.
Carpets and curtains can also be sources of dust mite allergens, because
they are airborne and so will cling to any soft material, including your
pillow. Washing your bedding on a regular basis, vacuuming and cleaning
curtains will all help to keep dust mites at bay.
Fresh air
Dust mites thrive on warm, damp conditions, which is why the allergies
related to our beds are worse in the winter. The combination of central
heating and limited fresh air creates exactly the environment you don't
want. Instead of making your bed straight away, leave it to air in the
morning and try to get some fresh air into your house during the winter
months.
Whilst you can't buy "anti-allergy" beds, there are
ways you can look after your bed, your mattress and your bedding to reduce
the risk of dust mites in your home.
