There are several things that you need to consider if you're planning on looking for a bed that will last as long as possible:

Construction

The bed should be well constructed - whatever it's made from. If the bed is flat-packed or requires assembly, it should come with the right fixtures and fittings and should go together easily and without the need for force. If you look at beds in a showroom before you buy, have a good look at the bed base and don't be afraid to check the sturdiness of the construction - make sure storage drawers run smoothly, check the general surfaces for scratches or dents and look at the condition of the upholstery.

Mattress

You should really buy the best mattress you can. A really good mattress will give you the support and comfort you need, and will last for years. By contrast, a cheap mattress will not be properly designed or built and will lose any support it gives you in a very short time. Ask for advice on the different types of mattress available before you buy and make sure you turn your mattress, protect it against damage and follow it's care instructions.

Care

The care you take of your bed can have an affect on how long it lasts. If you don't follow the manufacturer's care instructions, or look after your bed and mattress in general, your bed could suffer and you could find yourself needing to buy a new bed sooner than you think.
