Bunk Bed Safety
Bunk beds can be very exciting for kids. It starts with the debate of
who is going to sleep on the top bunk and ends with parents thankful for
the increased space in the room. However, there are certain safety precautions
that must be taken when placing bunk beds within the bedrooms of children.
First, we must assess the main risks:
• Children can fall through the space between the bed railing and
the mattress, which can result in strangling.
• When children complain that the guard rails are a hindrance, parents
have made the mistake of removing the guard rails.
Second, there are certain precautions that must be taken:
• Make sure the ladder is secured on the bed and firmly on the floor
• Make sure the mattress fits properly. As much as three inches
of space between the mattress and the railing can result in the child
falling through.
• Never remove the guard rails because they are there for a reason.
• Make sure there are not any night stands next to the bed in case
a guard rail is faulty and the child falls out.
• Occasionally check all bolts to ensure they are tight. Bolts can
loosen over time and cause the bed to fail.
It is important to ensure the safety of bunk beds because a child can
be severely injured if any part of the bed is faulty. Simply follow the
safety tips above to make sure the bunk bed is safe enough for your child.
