Do I need a new mattress?

There are several ways to tell whether your mattress needs replacing:

• If it is more than 10 years old
• If it sags in the middle or at the edges
• If you can feel the construction through the mattress cover
• If the cover is torn or stained
• If you wake in the morning with strained or aching muscles

If more than two of these conditions apply to your mattress, it's probably time for a change.

Do I need to change my bed as well?

Most experts agree that you shouldn't put a new mattress on an old base. Not only will you not get the quality of support you need, but you may invalidate the mattress manufacturer's guarantee. Ideally, you should buy your new mattress and a new bed at the same time.

How much should I spend?

Mattress prices range from around £100 to well over £1000, depending on the quality of the materials and construction used. You should spend as much as you can on your mattress, but price alone is no guarantee that you're getting the best mattress for you. The best thing to do is to set a budget and find the most comfortable, supportive mattress that you can afford.

Do I need a firm mattress if I have a bad back?

There was a time when only hard beds and firm mattresses were recommended for people who suffered from back pain. Today, however, there are a number of different ratings of mattress and bed base construction which means you can have a comfortable mattress that also gives you the support you need whilst you sleep.

What size mattress should I buy?

The bigger, the better, as far as your comfort is concerned. If you share a bed, a standard double really isn't big enough. You should choose a king or even superking if you have the room for it, which will allow you and your partner to have more sleeping room, enhancing your comfort and the sleep experience.
