Mattress makeover

If you've been neglecting your mattress, there are ways you can give it a quick makeover.

You should always look after your mattress to make sure that it continues to provide you with the support you need in order to get a good nights sleep. Ideally, you should be following the care instructions that came with your mattress, but if you haven't and your mattress is beginning to show signs of age, there are some things you can do to help extend its life:

Turning

Unless you have purchased a no-turn mattress, you should have turned your mattress every week for the first couple of months after you bought it and three or four times a year after that. If you haven't been turning your mattress, you could find that the filling has compacted in the areas where the mattress takes most of the strain, which will in turn lead to less support for you. Try turning your mattress - both flipping it over and rotating it from head to foot - every couple of weeks for the next few months. This should help the filling to disperse more evenly.

Cleaning

It's important to keep your mattress clean and aired on a regular basis. This helps to reduce the presence of dust mites, whose droppings contain enzymes that can cause or contribute to allergies such as asthma and eczema. Air your mattress every day simply by not making your bed for at least 20-30 minutes in the morning, but turning the covers back to let in the cool air and light. When you change your bed, allow the bare mattress to air for a similar period. You can also gently vacuum the dust from your mattress, and clean any stains with a gentle solution and a small amount of warm water.

A mattress cover not only protects your mattress and helps to prevent allergens being released into the air around you, but specially-designed covers also give you additional support, adding an extra layer to your mattress.
