Does the size of your mattress matter? It does if you want a good night's sleep.

When you're searching for a new mattress, there are several things you need to consider, and size is one of them. Whether you sleep alone or share your bed, you need to have enough space to yourself to allow you to move around freely and sleep in the position that's most comfortable for you. A bed that's too narrow or too short will almost certainly disrupt your sleep, which can have a knock-on effect on your relationships, work and study.

The long and the short of it

Most people sleep on a mattress that's too short. Ideally, your mattress should be six inches - or 15 centimetres - longer than the tallest person. So, if you're over six feet, or you share your bed with someone who is that tall or taller, you really need a mattress that's at least 6'6" long and a bed that will support it. If your mattress is too short, you may be forced to curl up into an uncomfortable position, which will then have an impact on how much width of the bed you take up. When you're trying out mattresses, make sure that the sizes you are looking at have the length you need.

Room to move

It's really important that your bed allows you the room you need to sleep comfortably. A standard double bed is just 4'6" wide - if you share a bed that's this size, you're only getting 2'3" of space to sleep in, which is roughly equivalent to a baby's cot. Whilst a double bed of this size may be OK for occasional use in a guest room, it really isn't suitable for two people to sleep in night after night. For just a little more floor space and a little extra money, a king size bed will give you the additional width you need to enjoy your own space at night. If you have the space, consider a superking, or look at custom-made beds that can be both longer and wider than standard sizes.
