There is nothing more frustrating than lying wide awake when your bedtime swings around. After all, the benefits of sleep are proven to help us function on a day-to-day basis. However, it’s important to remember that you can improve your sleeping habits quite easily. Just have a stab at the following things before bed and you should be nodding off in no time whatsoever.

Drink hot milk

Drinking hot milk before bed isn’t just an old wives’ tale – there’s actual science behind it! Milk is rich in an amino acid called tryptophan, which boosts the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin when it enters your body.

Read a book

Reading for just a few minutes before bed each night can help relieve stress. And whether you’re conscious of it or not, stress and anxiety may be just the thing that’s preventing you from dozing off. If you do follow this trick, be sure to read an actual book rather than an e-book. Electronics – like phones and laptops – stimulate the human brain, which is the last thing you need before hitting the hay.

Get into bed only when it’s time to sleep

You need to train your brain when it’s time to sleep. The biggest way you can trigger this is by climbing into bed when you’re planning to snooze. Therefore steer clear of lying on your bed when you’re not planning on sleeping, such as if you’re watching a film or talking on the phone.

Let there be darkness

The slightest bit of light can disturb your sleep – and too much can stop you from dozing off altogether! Be sure to make the room as dark as possible, whether it’s by closing your curtains tightly or even wearing a sleep mask.

Enjoy a hot bath

This one is doubly important. In one respect, it helps the body relax and wind down. In another respect, it increases the body’s temperature so that you should feel slightly groggy before bed. Both of these things can contribute towards your slumber.

Nighty night

Hopefully, you should have a good night’s sleep on your hands from now on. In fact, once you’ve also purchased a new mattress from MattressNextDay, you should find that you’re looking forward to bedtime each and every night.
