Perhaps you’re experiencing poor quality sleep in your own bed. It could be that your mattress is looking worn or lumpy, or maybe you’ve had your current mattress for over five years. Whatever the reason, if you’re considering buying a new mattress, there are a number of things you need to consider.

Understand what you need

Do you need an entirely new type of mattress? If you’ve been waking up with aches and pains, or you’re experiencing poor sleep quality, you need to look at the different types of mattress that are available. It may even be worthwhile seeking recommendations from your doctor. A mattress is an investment and you should have a clear understanding of what you need. Once you know this, you can set a budget and then begin looking at what mattress might suit you.

Undertake research

Really take the time to look at all of the different types of mattresses that are available. You know what you need, you just need to translate that into what kind of mattress will work best for you. Undertaking research will ensure that your decision is informed and conducive to a better night’s sleep.

Consider size

It’s really important to think about the size you need – are you able to move freely during the night? If your movements are restricted by the size of your bed, it’s likely that your bed is too small. If you currently have a double mattress, ask yourself, would you benefit from upgrading to a king?

Think about firmness

This is very personal to the buyer; the type of firmness that works for one person probably won’t be as comfortable for another. However, there are certain recommendations of firmness depending on your needs. For example, if you have lower back pain, you would probably benefit from a medium-firm mattress. A mattress that is too soft may stop you from moving freely, whilst a mattress that is too hard may cause discomfort. Thinking about firmness is imperative.

Remember, knowing what will work for you is the key to purchasing the right mattress. You may think that a super-soft bed is what you will find most comfortable, but you could be wrong. Take your time to look at all the options available.
