Beds and taking care of them

Once you’ve bought your new bed and mattress, you must look after them.

Once you’ve bought your new bed and mattress, you must look after them.

If you’ve taken the time to choose the best bed you can afford and you’ve just had it delivered and assembled, you may think that your work is done. It’s important, however, that you continue to look after your bed so that it gives you the best support and sleeping experience it can.

On delivery

When your bed arrives, make sure that it is assembled on an even surface, or use wood blocks or spare carpet to make it even. Putting your bed on a sloping surface can mean that you don’t get the support you need when you’re sleeping.

You should also make sure that you remove all the protective wrapping that comes with the bed and the mattress, unless you are specifically asked not to do so. Leaving coverings, particularly plastic, on beds will encourage moisture and damp to build up in the fabric.

Make sure that you have the manufacturer’s care instructions. Read them carefully after your bed has been delivered and keep them safe so that you can refer to them in future.

Over the years

Regular care of beds and mattresses helps to ensure that you get the most out of them. The care instructions that you get with your bed and mattress should cover everything you need to know, but here are some basic principles:

? Never soak your mattress or bed base to get rid of stains. Use a mild detergent and make sure that the base is dry before you put the mattress back on top, and that the mattress is dry before you make the bed.

? You can also clean your mattress and base with your vacuum. If you are worried about dislodging too much dust, keep your room well ventilated as you vacuum. Be careful with the mattress, as vigorous cleaning can cause damage.

? Always treat your bed with respect; don’t let your children use it as a trampoline and don’t put too many things in under-bed storage drawers – they’re not made to carry excessive weight.
