Beds – buying second hand

Should you look at second hand beds?

Should you look at second-hand beds?

If you’re furnishing a new home or simply don’t think you have the cash for a new bed, you might think about buying second-hand. At Bed Next Day, we’d always advise you to buy new rather than second hand, in order to reduce the risk of an unhygienic mattress or a base that’s a fire risk.

If you do decide to look at second hand beds however, bear the following things in mind:

? Age – both beds and mattresses are really past their best by the time they are 10 years old. If you are looking at second-hand beds, find out how old they are. Some bed bases, particularly those that are wooden or metal, can be renovated or refurbished, with new slatted bases to support your mattress. If this is the case, you need to find out whether the cost of the repairs is more than it would cost you to buy a new bed in the first place.

? Condition – don’t buy a bed unseen. It’s best to stick to local classified ads or online sellers that are in your area. If you want to avoid the physical aches and pains associated with a damaged base or a sagging mattress, make sure you check the bed’s condition before you commit to buying. Once you’ve handed over the cash to the seller, you could end up being stuck with a bed that’s no use to you – and that you now have to get rid of.

? Hygiene – hygiene is an important issue, particularly if you are looking at beds that come with a second-hand mattress. Whilst the price may be good, are you really happy with the thought of the condition of the mattress inside the cover? We sweat at least half a pint of fluid every night, and moist, warm conditions are ideal feeding and breeding grounds for the common dust mite. Unless you can guarantee that your mattress has been through an intensive cleaning process, you may want to think twice about buying the bed.
