Beds can be the focus for relaxation in your life.
For many people, the bedroom is a haven – a place of peace and quiet away from the television, work and chores. This is exactly how it should be – how can you rest well at night if there are distractions all around you? Here are some tips on how to create your own comfort zone.
Beds and bedding
Create a focal point in your room by choosing the right beds and bedding. A comfortable, supportive bed makes all the difference to the quality of sleep you get and, if your current bed is over 10 years old, you really need to think about taking another look at the beds on the market. The range is enormous and you’re certain to find a new bed that fits with your room. Once you have, treat yourself to some new bedding, or a soft throw to go over the top of your duvet. This will give you a warm, welcoming look.
Ban the TV
It’s common to have a television and DVD player in your bedroom, but it’s not good for you. The television is a distraction and watching from bed before you go to sleep can contribute to a disturbed night’s rest as your brain tries to take in what it’s seen. In addition, just the presence of an electrical item in your room can make the atmosphere less relaxing; which is why you should also consider moving your computer, playstation and other electrical entertainment items out of your room completely.
Fix the lighting
In order to become an oasis of calm, your bedroom needs to be properly lit. Black-out blinds or properly-lined curtains help to keep out the daylight when you need to sleep, and you can use table lamps, wall lighters above your bed, and dimmed overhead lighting to create an intimate, cosy atmosphere. Pop upstairs 10 or 15 minutes before you go to bed, draw the curtains and put on some soft lighting; when you finally come to bed, you’ll be walking into a warm, calm room.
It’s easy and fairly cheap to turn your room into a space that helps you relax and sleep well. Look at new beds, remove clutter, add warm colours and fabrics and adjust your lighting and you have the perfect place to escape to.
