How do I know when it’s time to replace by bed?

There are several indications that your bed may be past its best. If it’s 10 years old or more, you probably need to change it. If you’re waking up in the morning with aching joints or sore muscles, your mattress is too soft for you. If your bed base is damaged, the castors or legs are broken, or you find yourself rolling into the middle of your bed, it’s time for a change.

How do I choose a new bed?

Don’t buy the first bed you see. Take the time to research the beds available – both online and in showrooms. When you’ve got a shortlist of the beds and mattresses you like, try them out. This doesn’t mean sitting on the edge – it means lying down for at least 5 minutes to test the bed for comfort.

How much should I spend?

It doesn’t necessarily follow that the most expensive bed is the best bed for you. If you have limited cash, set your budget and look for beds and mattresses that fit within it. In general, your bed base should be sturdy and your mattress should give you the support you need for many years of comfortable sleep.

Is it true that hard beds are best for your back?

Although this used to be the general advice, it’s now accepted that the hardness of the bed doesn’t have that much influence on your comfort. More important is the quality of your mattress – which is why you should always try out a range of beds and mattresses before you buy. Mattress technology has come a long way in the last few years so you should be able to find one that suits you.

How should I look after my bed?

Your bed base or bedstead and mattress will come with care instructions. You should follow these instructions carefully, but also consider using accessories such as mattress and pillow protectors to extend the life of your mattress and to turn your mattress regularly if it’s recommended by the manufacturers.
