Beds – is it time you changed yours?

Do you know when it’s time to get a new bed?

Do you know when it’s time to get a new bed?

The average lifespan of beds is around 8-10 years; the same applies to most good mattresses. The rate at which the support offered by your current bed declines will depend on how well it’s been treated, but if you’ve had it for a while, you may need to think about changing it. The longer you sleep in a bed that doesn’t give you the level of comfort you need, the more likely it is that you will wake up each morning suffering from various aches and pains.

How do you know when it’s time to change? The Sleep Council suggests that beds should go through an “MOT” test, assessing whether it is time to change. Some of the things that you should consider include:

? Aches in the morning – if you’re continually waking up in the morning with some type of ache, and particularly if your back is sore or uncomfortable, your mattress may be getting past its best. A good mattress supports you throughout the night, no matter what position you sleep in, whereas an old one simply gives way when you lie down.

? Rolling – a sure sign of a sagging double mattress is when both partners end up rolling into the middle of the bed. There comes a point where no amount of mattress-turning can solve this problem. The only answer is to invest as much as you can in a new mattress that allows you to use all the available space on your side of the bed.

? Feeling springy? If you can actually feel the springs in your mattress when you’re lying down, or any other part of the mattress’s construction is noticeable through the fabric, you need to go shopping. Beds cannot be comfortable when the internal parts of the mattress are noticeable.

? Do you sleep well? If you’re not sleeping well because the bed is too small for you and your partner, or because you’re continually trying to find a more comfortable position, it’s probably time to go and look at the huge range of beds that today’s retailers have available.
