Beds to build a room around

Whether you’re planning a guest room, a child’s room or your own bedroom, the bed’s the most important piece of furniture.

Why are beds so important? Well, it’s because sleeping or resting in bed is what we do for the vast percentage of time we spend in our bedrooms. Our beds need to be comfortable, supportive and practical.

The type of beds you consider buying will depend on which room you’re designing. Each room will have different uses and requirements which, in turn, will influence the types of bed you choose:

? Master bedrooms – your own bedroom should be a place you can escape to. Whether you want it to be ultra-modern, sleek and sophisticated, romantic, neutral or playful, you need to select a bed that will work with your style. There’s no point buying a bed just for its looks, however. It must be comfortable so that you and your partner if you have one, get the best quality of sleep possible.

? Guest beds – when you’re preparing a guest room, you may have completely different priorities and requirements. Your spare room may be small, so a double bed is out of the question. You may want to consider single beds that have a second bed stored underneath them. This lets you have two single beds or a double bed when you need it without losing the space when the room’s not in use. Alternatively, you could choose a wall bed, hidden in a faux cupboard until you need it. Wall beds can be integrated with desks so if you need to use your spare room as an office or study, you can still convert it into a bedroom when you need to. You could also go for a sofa bed, turning your room into a small sitting area until you have guests to stay.

? Kids’ bedrooms – a child’s bed is a vital part of their bedroom. Children need to sleep well, from the time they leave their cot to the time they leave home. Don’t buy cheap beds and mattresses because it’s “only for the kids”. There’s such an amazing choice when it comes to kids’ beds and furniture that it could be difficult not to get carried away, but if you concentrate on comfort first and style second, you will be treating your child to the sleep they deserve.
