From monsters to magazines, all sorts of things can lurk under your bed.
What’s under your bed? For small children, it’s often the fear of things that hide under the bed that gives them nightmares and forms the basis of all their favourite stories. Teenagers often use the space under their bed to hide the things they don’t want their parents to see and, as adults, we love the extra storage space that beds give us. Here are some of the things that you might find under beds across the country:
? Bed linen – divans often come with drawers or storage space built in, which gives you the ideal place to store bed linen and towels for your room. You can also use them to store spare duvets and pillows or winter blankets, where they are easily accessible and hidden away from public view.
? Magazines – we’ve all heard about the stereotyped teenage boy who hides his magazines away from his mother – but magazines and books are frequently found underneath beds. Reading in bed is one way to take our mind off the pressures of the day, whether we’re studying at school or busy at work, and so it’s no surprise that our reading material ends up under the bed.
? Exercise equipment – under the bed is an ideal place to store fold-away exercise equipment. Rowing machines, exercise bikes and weights take up a lot of space, but if you can hide them away once you’ve finished using them, so much the better. Just like kids’ toys, the space under the bed is a great place to store things when you’re not using them.
? Dust – unfortunately, we don’t vacuum under the bed often enough – so there’s usually a build up of dust under there. That’s bad news for people with allergies – try and reduce the amount of allergens that can build up in your room by replacing your carpet with wood flooring or very short-pile rugs that won’t hold as much dust.
Whatever type of bed you buy, don’t forget the great storage opportunities it gives you. If you buy a bed on legs, think about getting some lined wicker baskets to put underneath that can hold bedding, books, games or clothing – anything that helps you to keep your bedroom free from clutter.
