Choosing a mattress doesn’t come around often and chances are, you don’t know what to look for. Truth is, it all depends on your height, weight & sleeping position. If you sleep on your side, you’re like 50% of the nation. We love a good side sleep in the U.K! As comfy as it is, you need to make sure your body is getting the support it needs or it can lead to spinal issues. The mattress should align your spine, so something a little softer than average is best suited. To align the spine whilst sleeping on your side, your shoulders and hips should sink into the mattress relieving pressure from your spine. You’re best looking at soft mattresses or if you prefer a little extra support, a soft-medium would be fine also.

As a back sleeper, you’re technically in the ideal sleeping category. Not only is it easy on the spine, it’s easier on the face, you’re a lot less likely to get premature wrinkles. Although it’s keeping your back perfectly aligned already, the spine still needs good support from the mattress. If your mattress is too soft your spine will start to arch and will eventually lead to a sore neck and poor sleep quality. The perfect mattress for you would be a medium-firm dependant on your weight. If you’re over 17 stone, a firm is better suited so it can support your weight. Any less than 17 stone, a firm mattress won’t absorb any of your body weight and best to avoid.

Sleeping on your front is potentially the worst way you could lay, however where there’s a will, there’s a way! As long as you have a mattress that will support your body’s contours where it needs it, you can adopt this position without any long-term problems. As a front sleeper, you need to avoid a softer mattress. If your mattress is too soft your torso will sink into it causing your spine to arch. A firm/medium firm mattress is best to avoid sinking in and misaligning your spine for the night. As with back sleepers, the firmness of the mattress depends on your weight.

MIXING IT UP
If you’re the type of person that sleeps in a variety of positions, the best thing to do is get a medium-firm. Medium-firm mattresses are great for many sleeping positions and are widely adaptable. So if you’re the type that fidgets in their sleep, a medium firm would be your best bet.
