Is your mattress making you snore?

Snoring is a common bedtime affliction experienced by a quarter of people in the UK, so if you’re a snoring sleeper, don’t worry – you’re definitely not alone. There are numerous tips and tricks you may have heard to help stop you snoring, but one thing that is often overlooked is the mattress. It could be that your mattress is the culprit for your noisy bedtime breathing.

Restricted airways

Mattresses that cause you to sink down when you lay on them could be the cause of your snoring, since your air passages may be under tension throughout the night. It’s important for snorers to keep their airways clear and straight in order for them to breathe properly, so a slightly firmer mattress may help alleviate your snoring.

Equally, if your mattress is somewhat old, it could have sunk to the shape of your body over time. This means your body isn’t being properly supported and your airways may not be as clear as they could be during the night.

Choose a mattress that feels nice and firm and a sturdy bed frame that will hold you parallel to the floor. Make sure you flip or rotate your mattress regularly in order to prevent sinking in just one area, and replace it every five to seven years to keep it as supportive as possible and the snores at bay.

Allergens and dust mites

Allergies are one of the most common causes of snoring since the nose and airways can become narrower and stuffed up when having an allergic reaction, making breathing more difficult. You should ensure your bedroom is free from dust and aim to clean regularly in order to minimise the levels of pollens and irritants.

Mattresses and duvets tend to harbour dust mites and other allergens, and since they can’t be thrown into the washing machine like your sheets can, it’s not easy to get them totally clean. We highly recommend that snorers try hypoallergenic mattresses and bedding, which help to prevent dust mites and pollen from hanging around during the night. You may find that your snoring significantly improves after making these changes.
