Top tips for keeping your new mattress in good condition

Purchasing a new mattress is a long-term investment that should help you to enjoy high quality sleep for many years to come. But like most possessions, the life of your mattress can be significantly extended if you take good care of it, so make sure you adhere to these easy, common sense tips to help your new mattress to remain clean and in good shape.

Invest in a mattress protector

It’s only natural to sweat during the night, even in cooler weather, so your new mattress may become stained or discoloured over time. To help to protect your mattress, invest in a good quality cover that you can remove for regular washing. Waterproof and non-waterproof products are widely available, in addition to ones made from a barrier fabric to help to relieve dust allergy symptoms.

Vacuum your mattress thoroughly

Each week remove all the bedclothes and vacuum the mattress thoroughly, ensuring that you reach into any crevices in the mattress where dust and dirt may linger. Also, remember to vacuum around the edges of the bed base or divan as well as behind the head of the bed, where cobwebs tend to accumulate.

Pull back the covers

Every morning, pull the bed clothes back to reveal the mattress and leave it exposed for half an hour, to allow any body moisture to evaporate. This is important at all times of the year, but especially so in warm weather.

Ban the kids from bouncing

If you have young children, they will probably have discovered that new mattresses make excellent trampolines. However, bouncing should be strictly discouraged to help to prevent the mattress from becoming misshapen, as this will affect its comfort and the quality of your sleep.

Turn your mattress regularly

If your new mattress has handles on the side, this is a good indication that it should be turned regularly to help it to maintain its proper shape. By turning your mattress, you can help it avoid developing dips where you sleep. Turn the mattress over and lengthways at least once every three months.

By taking a little time to follow these simple steps, you will help to prolong the life of your mattress and to maintain its proper shape, giving you a better chance of enjoying healthy, reinvigorating sleep.
