Have you ever had less sleep than normal and woken up feeling surprisingly refreshed? That’s because when we sleep, we go into five or six 90 minute sleep cycles. Waking up midway through one of these will make you feel extremely groggy and almost like you didn’t sleep at all. So, sometimes, it’s better to get less good quality sleep than more poorer quality sleep. Obviously, more good quality sleep would be ideal, so here’s how to work it out…
Timing is everything when it comes to sleeping well. The best way to get a good nights sleep is to wake up in between sleep cycles. Since we all have between five and six a night, it’s quite simple to calculate. The times are quite specific as they allocate 15 minutes to fall asleep. But you’re guaranteed to feel better if you stick to them.
If you wake up at 7 am, you should go to sleep at either:
- 11:15 PM
- 12:45 AM
- 2:15 AM
- 3:45 AM

The trick is to break your sleep into 90-minute chunks and following a sleep calculator helps you do that. As long as you complete a 90-minute cycle, you’ll wake up feeling refreshed. So, if for whatever reason you only have an hour left tosleep you may as well stay awake. And if you have 2 hours, you’re better off only sleeping for 90 minutes of that. Waking up from an incomplete cycle leads to a groggy awakening and is best to avoid.
