Once you've decided to get a brand new mattress, you need to decide
what to do with your old one. Unfortunately, you don't have many
options, as the market for re-using and recycling mattresses is very small.
Throw it away
Most people have to throw their mattresses away. If you can, take it down
to your local waste management site, or call your council, who can arrange
to come and collect large items from your home. Your mattress will probably
end up in a landfill site, along with the thousands of other mattresses
that are thrown away every year.
Depending on the age and state of your mattress, you may be able to re-use
it. If your mattress is only a couple of years old, and you've replaced
it because you've bought a bigger bed, or wanted to try the new
memory foam technology, there will still be life in your mattress. You
can re-use it yourself in a guest room, or you can give it to friends
or family members who need one. You can also contact local charities,
who may be able to take it for use in hostels or for other charitable
If you're lucky enough to live somewhere that has a recycling scheme
for mattresses, then this is the best option to choose. Mattresses actually
have a lot of recyclable materials in them and, if you have the time,
you can even break down the mattress yourself and use its constituent
parts in a number of ways - from using the ticking to make dressing-up
costumes for the kids to using the springs as a trellis frame in the garden.
Talk to your mattress supplier to see if they will take your mattress
away when they deliver your new one. Many retailers are unable to do this
due to various health and safety restrictions, but some may be able to
help. If not, ask them for advice on getting rid of your old mattress
safely and quickly.
