If you occasionally miss out on a few hours of sleep,
it's not a big deal. In most cases, your body will
make it up over the next several days. If you routinely
sleep less than your body requires, though, you're
opening yourself up to a whole host of physical and emotional
problems.
You don't need to go forty or fifty hours without
sleep to suffer from sleep deprivation. If you routinely
shortchange your body by an hour here and an hour there,
the effects do start to add up. The consequences associated
with chronic sleep deprivation include decreased daytime
alertness, impaired short term memory, irritability, relationship
stress, depression and a higher risk of automobile or
occupational injury. In fact, one research study found
that the effects of not getting enough sleep were about
the same as having a .05 blood alcohol level.
Sleeping poorly has also been associated with high blood
pressure, stroke, obesity, diabetes, stroke, heart failure
and mood disorders. Our bodies use sleep time to repair
and grow cells, and when they are deprived of that time,
they run inefficiently.
Your mattress can play a big part in helping you get a
good night's sleep. When you sleep on a proper mattress
that supports your body, you're less likely to have
your sleep disturbed during the night by tossing and turning
due to minor aches and pains. You'll find a large
selection of quality mattresses at www.mattressnextday.co.uk,
one of the UK's best sources of high quality mattresses.
