SMALL SINGLE BED - BUYING GUIDE

Before you buy any bed there are a number of things that must be taken into consideration, firstly and most importantly, what is the bed for.  This may seem a silly question and most people will say that it is for sleeping on.  This is basically true but even that can be very different.  Is the bed to be used for a child, teenager or maybe even as a guest bed. Each of these will determine how much use and how strong the bed needs to be. A child’s bed will not necessarily have to be as solid as a teenager’s bed.  Teenagers generally use their bed quite a lot as they grow up the bed will need to be much stronger.  An adult’s bed will also need to be quite solid as it will have to bear the extra weight.  Whereas if the bed is just for a guest room, where it will only be used occasionally, it does not need to be as solid as a bed that is being used continuously.

A small single bed can be the ideal bed for a children’s room or if the bedroom, where it is going to be situated, is very small.  It is always preferable to have a bed that allows you to change the bedclothes easily by being able to get to both sides of the bed or able to move it easily. A bed that fits close to the bedroom walls is always going to be more difficult. It is always ideal to be able to have a bedside table or cabinet next to the head of the bed, this will enable you to have a bedside light and other items, such as a drink of water near you when going to bed.

Most people choose a bed on how it looks, especially the design of the headboard, this of course, is very important as this is the part that shows and must fit into the décor of the bedroom.  It should also be remembered that the décor of a bedroom changes quite often in many households and therefore the bed frame and bed head should be chosen very carefully to ensure that it will match any future bedroom changes.  The style of the bed head will also be decided on where the bed is going to be used.  Is it the master bedroom, a child’s bedroom or a guest bedroom?

In the Master bedroom the bed head will usually be such that it makes a statement and is something you can stand back and admire.  If the bed is for a child’s bedroom it needs to be much more practical, not have any sharp corners etc.  If the bedstead is for a guest room  it will always be nice to have an attractive headboard so that the guests room can look attractive and inviting.

When choosing a bed always make sure that the part that supports the mattress is strong enough so that the mattress will not sag in the middle.  Remember it is the mattress you will be sleeping on and not the bed head.  The part you cannot see is just as important as the parts that are on show.
