We all know how vital a good night’s sleep is. The trouble is that life is busy, and we have so much to squeeze into our days that the need to sleep sometimes feels like an inconvenience. When you have a sleep routine that you go through every night, you get your body used to the fact that it’s time to go to sleep soon. The following three tips will help you create your own sleep routine. Prepare for tomorrow Thoughts of the day ahead can often keep us awake at night, so if there’s anything you can do to prepare for tomorrow, do it the night before. Making sure your to-do list is complete and up-to-date will definitely help, as will picking out tomorrow’s clothes. These things may not seem important in the grand scheme of things, but if your brain is busy thinking when it’s time to sleep, you won’t drop off as quickly. Switch off your devices This is going to be the trickiest one, no doubt, but it’s also one of the most beneficial. Phone and tablet screens give off a lot of blue light, which is a stimulant for the brain and is likely to keep you awake. The best thing you can do is make sure your alarm is set an hour before you intend to go to sleep and then not pick up your phone again that night. If you insist on using your phone before going to sleep, consider downloading an app that works as a blue light filter. Take some time to relax When you’ve prepared for the day ahead and switched off your devices, it’s time to relax. This will mean different things for different people but reading a book, gentle stretching, meditation, or having a warm drink are all good ideas. Just make sure the drink doesn’t contain any caffeine! One of the simplest ways to relax is to take some deep, slow breaths, filling your lungs completely. You could also try the 4-7-8 technique, in which you breathe in for four seconds, hold the breath for seven seconds, and breathe out for eight seconds. Try coming up with a sleep routine that works for your life and see how it helps you get to sleep.
