Laying around, watching the clock tick by when you have to be up in the morning is the worst thing. Insomnia affects up to 50% of Britons at some point in their lives. With falling asleep being such a problem, there's a lot of tips and tricks floating around on how to get some Z's. Here are a few tips on how to fall asleep faster...
Obviously, the smell of Lavender isn't going to make you fall asleep immediately or bees would never be awake. However, the lavender scent is scientifically proven to relax you and reduce agitation which is the main culprit for not being able to catch those Z's. Putting a little bunch in your pillowcase
or buying a lavender spray will work wonders.
2. Hide your clock
You're laying there, staring at the clock wondering why you're not asleep yet. This is the worst thing you can do for yourself. Constantly checking the clock will make your stress levels skyrocket which will only make it harder to sleep. You're better off just not knowing how much sleep you'll get tonight!
3. Take a shower before bed
Taking a hot shower then stepping out into a cool room will make your body temperature regulate and make it easier to fall asleep. Plus showers are pretty relaxing in general so even if the body temperature thing doesn't work, at least you'll feel relaxed!
4. Wear socks to bed
Research shows that having warm hands and feet can help speed up the sleeping process. In the study, participants placed a hot water bottle at their feet, which widened the blood vessels on the surface of the skin, thereby increasing heat loss. Shifting blood flow from your core to your extremities cools down your body, working in concert with melatonin. Maybe sleeping in socks isn't so crazy after all?
5. Cool your room
Have you ever noticed you get a lot more sleepless nights in the Summer? That's down to your body temperature dropping as your falling asleep. If it can't get to the right temperature from the room being too hot, you'll have a hard time falling asleep. Give yourself a fighting chance by cooling your room down before bedtime. I know, being cold isn't nice when you're awake but when you're sleeping, it's exactly what you need.
