When thinking of health beds, one of the first things you should look into is the mattress. Does the mattress fulfill the requirements for a healthy and uninterrupted sleep? It is not so much the brand name that matters, but the mattress that is most appropriate for you. This means making sure that your mattress adequately answers these questions: • Comfort level – does the mattress feel comfortable to you? You may be thinking that the most expensive mattress in the showroom is the most comfortable, but this is not the case. Don’t just pat the mattress with your hand or sit down on it. Do lie down on the mattress for 10-15 minutes. Turn from left to right. How do you feel after 15 minutes? • Sleeping position – are you a “side” sleeper, a “stomach” sleeper or a “back” sleeper? Generally, people who sleep on their side prefer more support and therefore look for more cushioning. This is because only a small area of the bed is supporting that side of their body, so a mattress must be able to accommodate a sleeper’s pressure points. On the other hand, a person who sleeps on his stomach may prefer a harder type of mattress. Those who sleep on their backs may want to look at mattresses that are fully adjustable. • Allergy triggers - find out what materials the mattress is made of. People are allergic to nylon while others are allergic to polyurethane foam. So always ask the sales representative about the mattress materials. If you have allergies, you may limit your choices to mattress materials that are exclusively hypo-allergenic. • Back health – if you are undergoing therapy for your back, ask your physiotherapist or back specialist what kind of mattress you should buy. Your physiotherapist may recommend certain sleeping or sitting positions for a certain number of minutes while you’re in bed so make sure the mattress you’re considering can be adjusted to fit these positions. www.mattressnextday.co.uk
