We all know that sleep is an essential part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. When we have enough sleep, we feel energised, refreshed and ready to take on the world. If we don’t get enough rest, it can be difficult to focus on everyday tasks and even simple things feel more difficult. Sometimes with all the stress of modern life, it isn’t always easy to get the hours we need. Here are three tips to help you get a peaceful night’s sleep and wake up feeling refreshed: Ensure you have the right bedding Getting a good night's sleep is impossible if you're uncomfortable. Investing in a good mattress and some supportive pillows will do wonders for helping you drift off, and will also ensure you're getting the support you need. You could find this also prevents any neck or back aches, as these are often due to poor quality bedding. Have a ‘wind down hour’ An hour before you usually go to bed, schedule in a wind down period. It can be difficult to get into bed after a busy, hectic evening and fall straight to sleep. Often our minds are still buzzing with activity and no matter what we do, we can’t seem to slow down. Instead of coming straight from a busy evening, try getting into your pyjamas and starting to relax an hour in advance. Set an alarm to let you know when your ‘wind down hour’ is starting and spend that time doing something calming, such as reading or taking a bath. Turn off the electronics It’s very tempting to watch TV in bed, but it can keep your brain from fully relaxing. The same can be said of browsing the internet or social media on your phone. Instead of finishing your day with a blast of electronics, opt for reading a book or listening to some relaxing music instead. Put your laptop away and put your phone out of reach so you won’t be tempted to pick them up and start checking emails. If you set an alarm via your phone, having it further away will also help you to get up in the morning, as you’ll have to get out of bed to turn it off.
