With this world going abuzz, it's not surprising to see more and more people searching for ways to get a reprieve from the hubbub. Among these is the simple yet often neglected act of meditation.

Ranging from achieving an improved attention span to an enhanced cognitive function, you are sure to reap optimum mental health benefits once you start infusing meditation into your lifestyle. Here are some of them:

1) Meditation is a stress buster.

Meditation has been proven effective in helping a person effectively manage stress and anxiety levels. This is because meditation, in itself, is relaxing. This, in turn, helps limit the release of cortisol, a hormone responsible for stress.

2) It boosts brain function.

According to a study conducted by researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara, people who engaged in mindful meditation manifested better working memories and enhanced verbal reasoning. The researchers further emphasized that meditation is conducive for enhanced overall cognitive functions.

3) It improves focus and attention.

If you've been having a hard time concentrating on a task at hand, meditating can be your best bet, as it can help you improve your focus. Research published in the journal “Frontiers of Human Neuroscience has established that meditation is effective in enhancing a person’s attentiveness. This is because meditation can help you gain better control over your emotions and other distracting sensations.

4) It delays the onset of degenerative mental diseases.

As a person ages, his or her brain undergoes physiologic changes that can lead to the development of certain mental conditions, some of which are degenerative. You can delay their onset by performing meditation frequently. According to experts, meditation shields the brain from various mental disorders by helping strengthen the myelin, an insulating tissue in the brain that is vital to the optimal functioning of the entire nervous system. It surrounds and shields nerve fibers.

5) It helps you achieve a sunny disposition.

If you think that you are on the way to depression, then meditation can be a great way to nip it in the bud. Meditation has been seen to be highly effective in beating signs of depression, especially in the elderly. The study, conducted by researchers from the UCLA, showed that meditation is effective in curbing symptoms of depression and other related condition. Supporting this claim is another study, this time conducted by scholars from the University of Exeter. Results revealed that meditation is a more effective treatment option compared to conventional regimens involving medications and therapy.
