There are numerous benefits to getting a good night’s sleep. However, getting the recommended 7-9 hours shut-eye each night is sometimes much easier said than done. Luckily, there are several things that you can do to positively impact your sleeping habits. One of them is watching what liquids you consume leading up to your bedtime. With this in mind, here is what you should and shouldn’t drink before you climb under the sheets. SHOULD drink Milk It’s not just an old wives’ tale that you should drink a glass of milk before bed. Milk contains an amino acid called tryptophan which helps induce sleep. As well, it also contains the hormone melatonin, which is proven to regulate the body’s sleep cycle. Hot cocoa A warm glass of cocoa won’t just boost your temperature on a cold night. Instead, it’ll boost your sleeping habits because it contains high levels of magnesium. Magnesium can also help your body wind down after a long day. Chamomile tea Chamomile tea will sedate your body and quickly induce sleep. It’s so successful that it’s sometimes recommended to those who suffer from insomnia. SHOULDN’T drink Alcohol There’s a common misconception that alcohol can help people sleep better. However, it’s actually more likely to keep you awake. Alcohol reduces the amount of REM you get a night – which in turn can lead to you waking more often throughout the night. In addition, alcohol acts as a diuretic and can, therefore, make you sweat and feel uncomfortable during the night. Anything with caffeine Any drinks that contain caffeine should be avoided at all costs. This includes coffee, teas and energy drinks. Consumption of these before bed can lead to difficulty in sleeping and a tendency to wake sporadically throughout the night with a sudden burst of energy. Sleep tight You can improve your sleeping habits by paying special attention to what foods and drinks can help prepare your body for sleep. To ensure you hit the hay easier each night, it’s also advisable that you invest in a brand-new mattress every eight years, rather than suffering on with an old one.
