Mattress Durability

How long will your mattress last?

As shoppers, we're encouraged to buy the best mattress that we can afford, but how do we know which mattress will give us value for money and last for years?

Even though we spend so much time sleeping, and the quality of sleep is so important to the way we function from day to day, we worry that we'll end up spending hundreds of pounds on a mattress only to have to replace it again in a few years. In fact, a good mattress should last around 8-10 years if it's properly cared for.

Construction

The first thing to consider if you're concerned about the life span of your mattress is how it is made. A well constructed mattress will be robust and recover during the day after you've slept on it at night. The springs and filling will remain in place rather than becoming squashed and the ticking, or outer cover, will be good quality to prevent staining and ripping. Take a look at our guides to various mattresses to see how each type is made and how that might affect their durability. The most expensive mattresses won't necessarily be the longest-lasting, so check the weight, density and filling type of the mattress you're interested in to see if you will be getting value for money.

Care

It's important that you care for your mattress properly. When you buy a new mattress, it will arrive with care instructions from the manufacturer. Always read these and make sure you understand them, before putting them somewhere safe so that you can refer to them at a later date. Check whether your mattress needs to be turned, for example, and if so, how often and which way. Some mattresses need to be turned from one side onto another, some just require switching so that the head end becomes the foot end and others are specifically designed for no turning at all. Make sure you know how to clean your mattress - take care with tufted mattresses if you're vacuuming them, and only use mild detergent if you're cleaning the outer fabric. Ensuring that you look after your mattress will help to increase its life span.
