Is there any way to guarantee a good night's sleep away from home?
Whether you have to travel regularly for work, or you always find that you sleep badly on holiday, there's a definite correlation between strange mattresses and disturbed sleep. We become very used to our own beds and mattresses - which is unsurprising when you consider that you spend around one third of your life in bed - and so a mattress in a hotel or holiday home will always take a little while to get used to.
Experts believe that it can take at least two or three nights to get used to a new mattress. This might explain why business travellers, who are often only away for one or two nights at a time, suffer so badly from poor sleep when they are away from home. Holiday makers on the other hand have time to adapt to the mattress they are sleeping on and can end up sleeping well just a few days into the holiday.
Can I do anything to make it easier?
The key to a good night's sleep, apart from a supportive mattress, is your routine, and how you prepare for sleep. At home, you probably go to bed at around the same time every night. This helps your body to get ready for sleep. In addition, it's a good idea not to eat or exercise just before you go to bed. You should also limit your alcohol intake, and try not to watch TV before you go to sleep. It's possible to maintain theses routines when you're away from home, and this should help you to sleep more easily and more comfortably.
If you are staying in a hotel and you find that your bed is extremely uncomfortable, ask to be moved to another room. The hotel will accommodate your request if it can, and, if you are specific about the reason for moving, you may be able to move to a room with a newer or firmer mattress that could help you to get the quality sleep you need.
