Mattresses For Double Beds
Our quick guide to choosing a mattress for your double bed.
Whether you're choosing your first double mattress, or it's just been a while since you bought one, the range of mattresses available today means that it can be quite daunting when you're faced with the selection in a showroom or online store. You may want to stick with the manufacturer that made your last mattress, but technology has moved on, so you might be missing out on the perfectly-designed mattress. Here are some of the things you should consider when choosing a double mattress:
• The base - you should buy your bed base and mattress at the same time. Putting an old mattress on a new base won't make any difference to your sleeping comfort, and putting a new mattress on an old base will probably mean that the old base won't provide the support that the mattress itself needs. As well as choosing a base for its looks or its storage features, remember to look at the base construction and consider how it will work with the types of mattress you are interested in. Slatted bases, for example, will work better with foam mattresses than sprung mattresses.
• Expense - if it's been a few years since you last bought a mattress, you may be surprised at the cost. You can get a perfectly good mattress for £200-£250, although you can obviously spend a lot more if you can afford to. General advice is to buy the best mattress you can afford, but don't assume that the most expensive mattress will automatically be the best one for you. Take the time to try out mattresses across the price range to see which type suits you.
