Mattress Or Bed - Which Comes First?

Once you've decided to buy a mattress and bed base together, which comes first?

A new bed is a big purchase. Not only is it expensive, but it's one of the most important pieces of furniture in your home. Combined with the right mattress, your bed is the place where you get much-needed sleep; and where you'll spend around one third of your life. It's important then, to choose the right bed and the best mattress - but which comes first?

Why the mattress should come first

Your mattress is the foundation of your sleep. The wrong mattress can cause you to toss and turn, leading to difficulties getting to sleep in the first place and then disturbed nights when you finally do. It can cause muscular problems and aggravate existing joint or muscular conditions. Disrupted sleep can make you less attentive and more irritable during the day, placing a strain on your working and personal relationships. Choosing the right mattress can allow you to have the comfortable sleep you need, leaving you refreshed in the morning. There's no point having a great bed if you've got a rubbish mattress.

Why the bed should come first

If you have a clear idea about the sort of bed you like, it's fairly straightforward to go out and buy it. All you really need to know is what size you want your bed to be and how much you can afford to pay. You can buy your bed as soon as you see one you like. What's more, you need to buy your bed first so that you know what sort of mattress you need. A bedstead, for example, will come with a slatted base. This is no good for sprung mattresses - but if you've already bought a sprung mattress, it's too late to do anything about it. You'll either need to choose a bed base that's not your ideal style, or you need to invest more money in an additional board to support the mattress.

Why you should buy both together

The obvious answer to this question is to do lots of research before you even think about buying. You'll be able to test mattresses to see which ones suit you best and look for bedsteads that fit in with your design ideas. When you've found both the bed and the mattress that are ideal for you, buy them both at the same time. Not only will this ensure that you get a perfect match; you should also be able to get them both delivered at the same time so that you can use them as soon as possible.
