3 myths about insomnia... debunked!
Insomnia is a very common problem - but although a lot of us suffer from a chronic lack of sleep, there are still many rumours circulating on the internet about insomnia. So, to help you understand insomnia a little better, here are three common myths about insomnia, debunked!
1. Insomnia is all in the brain
Although your brain is responsible for part of your internal body clock, it is in fact the rhythms of your entire body that influence whether or not you are able to get to sleep. Just like your brain, your internal organs, eyes, fat, and skeletal muscle all have their own clocks and rhythms, so they can also influence insomnia. Therefore, whilst exercising your brain is a good way to stave off insomnia during a night of no sleep, it is just as important to ensure that you exercise as much of your body as possible, as it all can have an effect on whether or not you get to sleep.
2. Staring at the ceiling will help you get to sleep
Whilst it may seem like a good idea to wait it out and stare at the ceiling when you're suffering from insomnia, hoping that you will fall asleep, it is in fact a myth that this helps. One of the key psychological factors in overcoming insomnia is associating your bed only with sleep, so lying awake in it isn't doing you any favours. Instead of lying there and staring at the ceiling or counting sheep, it is more effective to get up and do something for a while. Stimulating your brain will help make you more tired, whilst not lying awake in bed will help your brain start to associate your bed with the one thing you really need the most: sleep.
3. The quality of your mattress has no effect on your insomnia
So many people suffering from insomnia don't think of changing their sleeping apparatus, as they think that it won't have any effect on their lack of sleep, but this isn't true. In fact, your mattress, duvet, and pillows can have a major impact on whether or not you are able to get to sleep. If you can't sleep, it's probably likely that your mattress is not right for you or is too old, so needs to be changed or upgraded. Try it, and maybe you'll end up sleeping soundly after all!
