We'll Remove Your Old Mattress

How often should you change your pillows, duvet and mattress?

Our beds are arguably the most important piece of furniture in the house. On average, we spend 8 solid hours in them a night. Investing in them from time to time seems logical but how often should you change your pillows, duvet and mattress? Turns out, it's probably more often than you think...

Pillows

Pillows tend to be the most replaced item of bedding. Which is great, but are they being replaced as often as they should? It's quite easy to spot the warning signs when your pillows need chucking out. Generally, they become lumpy and flat over time. The lifespan of a pillow varies from 6 months to 3 years. Dependant on allergies or the quality of the pillow you purchased, to begin with. If you buy a high-quality pillow, it will last a lot longer in the long run. If you suffer from allergies and find your allergies are getting worse, it's time to ditch the pillow. Dust mites can settle in quite quickly and it's good to replace your pillow every 3-6 months.

When to wash:

A pillowcase should be washed at least every 3 weeks and the pillow itself, every 3 months.

Duvets

Duvets are a lot trickier to figure out when to replace as they seem to go on and on forever. They do show similar signs of wear and tear to pillows - lumping, thinning and generally lank. However, this doesn't seem to stop people from continuing to use them. If you use the same duvet year round, you should be looking to replace every 2-5 years. A good quality duvet will last the 5 years, a poor quaily duvet will start to show signs of wear and tear after just 1 year. It's best to use your judgement. If your duvet isn't quite as fluffy as it used to be, it could be time to switch it up. The best way to avoid duvets having a short lifespan is to invest in seasonal duvets. Having a separate duvet for summer and winter months is not only more hygienic, it stops the duvet living on the floor on those hot summers nights collecting dust.

When to wash:

duvet should be washed every 2-3 months. Remember to check the labels to see if it's washing machine safe!

Mattresses

Mattresses are definitely one of those things we're all reluctant to change. They're certainly not cheap and you have to figure out how to dispose of them once you get the new one. That said, did you know over 85% of UK residents believe their mattress is the cause of their neck and back pain and still replace the mattress every 10 years? 10 years is the average lifespan of a good quality mattress. If you are however finding yourself getting poor sleep every night, it might be time upgrade early. Picking a mattress entirely depends on which position you choose to sleep, most of us change up our sleeping habits in 10 years. If all of a sudden you start experiencing neck & back pain, it could be that your mattress has expired early or that the position you choose to sleep isn't compatible with the type of mattress. Find out which mattress to pick dependant on your sleeping position, here.

When to wash:

You should be cleaning your mattress every 6 months to avoid a build-up of sweat, dust & potentially bed bugs.
