How to wake up feeling refreshed

In this day and age, getting a good nights sleep is becoming a myth. We all tend to lead fast pace, busy day-to-day lives. With that comes a poor diet, lack of exercise and staring at screens all day. Which in turn, is wreaking havoc on our biological clocks. Studies show that most of us don't practice good sleep hygiene, which is key to getting a good nights kip. Here's how to wake up feeling refreshed...

Natural light

Since the invention of blackout curtains and blinds, most of us avoid sunlight at all costs in the mornings. Did you know that our bodies are trained to wake up when it's light out and sleep when it's dark? It's hardwired into our brains. So if you're trying to wake up in a pitch black room, you'll likely be having a hard time. Don't worry, you needn't throw out your brand new curtains! Just try and get out of bed as soon as you wake and let the sunshine in. If it's still dark when you wake up, turn on some lights. This will send signals to your brain that it's time to get up and get going.

Exercise

I know, on a grim Monday morning the last thing you want to be doing is working out. Although if you really want to supercharge yourself for the day, doing some cardio after you get up is the best way to do it. Even if it's something as simple as walking down the street whilst waiting for the kettle to boil. Moving your body promotes blood circulation - healthy blood circulation improves alertness and attention. Not only will you feel more awake, exercising releases the chemical serotonin. Serotonin is the chemical responsible for our happiness so you'll be feeling more awake and just happier in general.

Get a good mattress

Sleeping on a mattress that's not right for your body will set you up for a groggier morning. If the mattress is too hard you could be compressing blood capillaries and reducing blood flow. As I mentioned in the last point, healthy blood flow is essential to feeling alert. Did you know that purchasing the right mattress mainly depends on the sleeping position you reside in each night? You can check out our article on choosing the right mattress for you if you're not sure what's best for you.

Ditch the electronics

We are living in a digital age. Without even thinking we're staring at screens all day. Many of us wake up and immediately reach for our phones. Doing so is almost like overloading your brain with too much information, too quickly. Try to give yourself time to adjust before diving into your smartphone. If you enjoy reading in the mornings to stimulate your brain, try reading a paper or magazine. Of course, using your phone in the mornings is perfectly fine for your sleep health. Just try to give yourself 10 minutes out of bed or so before picking the phone up. Guaranteed you'll start feeling more refreshed in the morning if you do.
