Overcoming night-time distractions to get a great night's sleep
If you’re currently having difficulty sleeping, it might be because something is bothering you subconsciously during the night. There are many things that can disrupt your sleep patterns or prevent you from dozing off in the first place. We’ve created a list of some common sources of disturbance and how to deal with them so that you can get back to sleeping soundly.
1. A ticking clock
It’s possible that your own alarm clock is keeping you awake. If you have an old-fashioned, analogue alarm clock, the audible ticking can distract you and keep you awake at night. Even if you don’t notice the noise on a conscious level, it can act as an unconscious reminder that you have to wake up in a certain amount of time. Naturally, this can put your mind under pressure and prevent you from sleeping. Why not replace your analogue alarm clock with a digital one that doesn’t tick? This should allow you to get a much better night’s sleep.
2. Internal discomfort
Even if your mattress is comfortable, discomfort within your own body can prevent you from sleeping. For example, if you suffer from stiff joints, you may wish to do some mild exercises before bed to help make you more limber and prevent your joints from disturbing you during the night. You can also take other steps to avoid more common forms of internal, bodily discomfort. For example, we recommend that you avoid going to bed with a full bladder or (conversely) while feeling dehydrated. Make sure you’ve used the bathroom and drunk some water before going to sleep.
3. Bothersome light sources
Even faint luminosity can prevent you from getting a decent night’s sleep if you are particularly sensitive to light. If there is a light source in your bedroom that isn’t supposed to be there, it may be responsible for sleepless nights. You should check to make sure that your mobile phone’s screen isn’t emitting any light and that there are no cracks in your curtains that could admit light from the street outside before you get into bed.
The suggestions in today’s blog should help you get a great night’s sleep… especially if you also invest in one of our mattresses.
