Here at Mattress Next Day, we know that sleep is essential because it provides both physical and psychological down-time that allows you to recharge your mind and body. However, sleep isn’t just a necessity, it can also be a powerful psychological tool.
Sleeping gives you access to a mental state that you can’t properly replicate while awake. This state is of course called ‘dreaming’, and it can be incredibly useful to you. Believe it or not, your dreams aren’t just meaningless images, they are your brain’s way of processing the enormous amounts of information absorbed by your subconscious on a daily basis. As a result, they often contain valuable information and ideas that you couldn’t have remembered or come up with consciously. If you pay attention to your dreams, they can help in you in a broad variety of ways.
1. Creative thinking
Dreams can be a well-spring of great art and literature. If you’ve ever wanted to write a novel or paint a truly arresting picture, why not turn to your dreams for inspiration? Dreams often provide powerful images and curious, surreal notions which can be the seeds of great artistic endeavours. You can find examples of writers and artists who used dreams as inspiration in our earlier blog entry, ‘sleep and dreams in literature’.
2. Problem solving
Your dreams can often provide clues to solving real-life problems. Remember that dreams are your brain’s way of processing information. That information includes the problems that confront you in your life. When you dream, your subconscious mind has a chance to analyse the challenges that face you in a way your conscious mind can’t. The next time you face a great problem or hurdle in your life, think carefully about your dreams. The solution may be hidden in their imagery or narratives.
3. Emotional resolution
Your dreams can help you pinpoint sources of stress, anxiety and emotional conflict. If you’re feeling upset or highly-strung but can’t figure out why, we recommend looking at your dreams for answers. You are likely to dream about things that mean a lot to you and which have the power to effect your emotional state, so thinking about the images in your dreams can often help you find the source of your emotions. Once you know the source of your negative feelings, you can tackle them head-on.
Here at Mattress Next Day, we aren’t expert dream analysts, but we understand how powerful they can be. We can provide you with top-quality mattresses that will enable you to sleep comfortably and dream deeply.
