Mattresses - turnable or non-turnable?
Do you need to turn your mattress every few weeks? What benefits do
you get from a non-turnable mattress?
For many years, mattress construction required the customer to turn the
mattress on a regular basis in order to extend its life span and provide
as much support as possible. Today's mattress market still stocks
mattresses that need turning, but many mattresses are adopting a non-turnable
construction, where the mattress only needs to be rotated. So what's
the difference?
Turnable mattresses
Many mattresses need to be turned in order to ensure that the filling
remains evenly distributed. Manufacturers recommend that when you first
get your new mattress, you turn it every week, to help to settle the filling.
Do this for the first two or three months and then cut down to turning
once a month. You should never try to turn a double or larger mattress
by yourself, particularly if you have back problems. Mattresses are heavy,
and you need to turn it carefully. Follow our guide to easy turning:
• Rotate your mattress through ninety degrees
• Push the mattress so that it hangs slightly off the bottom edge
of your bed
• Raise the mattress up on the edge closest to the middle of the
bed
• Support the mattress as it falls towards the head end of the bed
• Rotate the mattress until it sits fully on the bed base
You will need help to raise the mattress and support it as it turns.
This is important because if you bang or bump the mattress as you turn
it, you may damage the springs inside, which could decrease the support
that your mattress offers.
Non-turnable mattresses
In recent years, mattress manufacturers have been looking for ways of
constructing mattresses so that they don't need to be turned over
at all. At the very most, all these mattresses need is occasional rotation
from head to foot. New materials and springing systems mean that the mattress
won't suffer from the same settlement problems as other forms of
construction may, and these mattresses are particularly useful for those
who are unable to turn a mattress by themselves because they live alone
or have back problems.
