Mattresses - why they need support

A mattress gives you the support you need, but it also needs to be supported in order to work well.

Ideally, bed bases and mattresses should work together to provide the ideal sleeping environment. That's why many manufacturers design ranges where the mattress and the base are sold together. It's also why most buyers' advice suggests that you buy a new bed base at the same time as you buy a new mattress.

Divan beds

Divan beds provide great support for most mattresses. The bases themselves come in different types, but all provide a solid base for the mattress to sit on. This means that you can choose from a wide range of mattresses when you buy a divan bed. Whilst manufacturers may offer a mattress with the divan, it will often be available in a range of ratings, so that you can have a soft one if you choose, or a firmer one if it suits you and your partner better.

Bedsteads

Bedsteads are increasing in popularity and more bed manufacturers are producing modern bedsteads to satisfy demand. In addition, people are buying antique, reproduction and reclaimed beds. In the majority of cases, bedstead bases have slatted wooden bases. These slats vary in spacing; some are close together whilst others are far apart. The spacing of the slats is important when it comes to choosing a mattress - too far apart and they won't be able to support a sprung mattress properly. In fact, the springs will end up falling between the slats, severely reducing the effectiveness of the support. When you're choosing a mattress for your bedstead, it's best to choose a non-sprung mattress, or to invest in a sprung base board that will cover the slats and support the mattress.

When you're shopping for a new mattress, make sure you consider what will be underneath it. If your existing bed base is damaged or old, you will not get the benefits you need from your new mattress. Always ask for advice before committing to a purchase.
