How to choose a zip and link mattress

Dreaming of a comfy night’s sleep despite your partner’s size or sleep preferences? A zip and link mattress, handmade in the UK, is the solution! If you’ve never heard of a zip and link mattress or haven’t fully understood its purpose before, you’ve come to the right place. We will eliminate the mystery and confusion shrouding this particular type of mattress below.

What is a zip and link mattress?

As the name suggests, a zip and link mattress is a large mattress made up of two mattresses of varying firmness and support. The two mattresses are joined together with a zip. The result is a large king or super king size mattress that caters to the comfort preferences of two people (or simply provides a larger sleeping surface).

Why choose a zip and link mattress?

The many benefits of a zip and link mattress are hard to overlook. In fact, it would be easy to say that everyone can benefit from a zip and link mattress, but let’s narrow it down. As mentioned above, couples with different sleep preferences and noticeably different body weights stand to gain the most from a zip and link mattress.

This mattress makes it possible for each person to enjoy their mattress (and sleep) just the way they like it. It also means that rolling together is a lot harder, which is a definite plus for many couples. But it’s not just couples who stand to benefit from zip and link mattresses. This type of mattress is also the right choice for you if:

  • You want a large mattress, but your home has a narrow staircase or an entrance that is difficult to navigate. In this instance, the zip and link mattress can be delivered as two separate mattresses and linked together once positioned in the bedroom.
  • You need to accommodate house guests, but don’t want to purchase additional beds and mattresses. In this case, the two mattresses can be unzipped and used separately.
  • If the double bed frame you have chosen has separate slatted supports for each side, a zip and link mattress will ensure sufficient separation for each half to move independently.

Can you turn a zip and link mattress?

The simple answer is yes you can, making them just like any other mattress. But because you’re working with two single mattresses rather than one double, it’s actually much easier to turn them. You’ll need to unzip your mattresses before you start. Rotate both mattresses. However, you’ll need to make sure that the zippers line up, so you’ll actually be swapping over the mattresses to the opposite side, otherwise you won’t be able to zip them back together.

So for example, if you sleep on the left side, your mattress will be on the right once it’s been turned. That means you may need to swap sides with your partner so that you’re sleeping on your mattress and not theirs. Turning regularly means that you’ll avoid those lumps and bumps, and prolong the life of your mattresses.

Is it one or two mattresses?

Both. A zip and link mattress is a large double mattress composed of two smaller mattresses of different firmness and support characteristics. The two mattresses can be zipped together, giving the user either a super-king or large king size mattress. However, the two mattresses can also be unzipped to make two single beds.

How will a zip and link mattress help me to sleep better?

What helps us to sleep well is unique to each individual and often depends on age, position preference, health, and so on. That is why we offer these mattresses with differing firmnesses, construction types, cover designs and fillings, so you can select the combination that is perfect for you.

Whether your personal preference is for a firm sleeping surface, a cushioned supportive mattress that moulds to your shape, or one that can help to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer, you'll find what you’re looking for in our collection. You won’t need to spend a fortune to benefit from a good night’s deep sleep either.

Our selection of budget zip and link mattresses will help you to get the rest you desire.

What does no roll-together mattress mean?

Roll-together is what two sleepers sharing a double mattress do when the centre springs start to wear out and press together. This process creates a dip in the middle of the bed. If the padding above the springs sags under the tension, this will exacerbate the dip. This causes two sleepers to roll together in a ‘v’ shape, not by choice but through gravity, which will have a negative effect on your rest.

But, with a zip and link, the couple’s body weight can be spread over the two mattresses. Both sleepers can enjoy the support they need, and the important feature of reduced spring compression over time, giving longevity to the product.
