Want the space of a king size bed with more flexibility for couples, guest rooms or difficult-to-access bedrooms? A king size zip and link mattress uses two separate mattress sections that fasten together to create a 150 x 200cm sleeping surface, while remaining easier to move individually than one full-size mattress.

        Very happy with MattressNextDay!

Having had a recent negative experience with one of main suppliers of mattresses and beds, I decided to give mattressnextday a go after the competitiveness of their prices. I am pleased I did....Very easy ordering process and good communication regarding the processing of the order, right through to delivery where I was kept well up to date with. The actual mattress as well I am very happy with! would definitely recommend.

      Help & Buying Guides

Why choose a king size zip and link mattress?

king size zip and link mattress gives you the generous proportions of a king with extra flexibility built in. It can be particularly useful for:

      • Couples with different preferences: Selected models offer different firmness levels on each side.

      • Flexible guest rooms: Keep both halves joined as a king, or split into compatible sections when individual beds are needed.

      • Difficult bedroom access: Two narrower mattresses are easier to manoeuvre around staircases, landings and tight corners.

      • Reduced partner disturbance: Independent mattress cores can help limit movement travelling from one sleeper to the other.

How to choose the right king size zip and link mattress

Start by checking the overall dimensions and how you intend to use the mattress. A standard UK king measures 150 x 200cm, and a king size zip and link setup commonly divides this into two 75 x 200cm sections. Always confirm the exact dimensions of the individual product before ordering.

For couples, consider firmness as well as mattress construction. Selected split-tension designs allow each side to have a different comfort grade, which can be useful when one person prefers a softer feel, and the other wants something firmer. Separate mattress cores can also help reduce movement travelling across the bed, although no mattress can guarantee complete motion isolation.

Next, consider the materials. Pocket springs can provide responsive support, while memory foam creates closer cushioning. Some mattresses also use natural fillings such as wool for a more traditional feel. Construction varies across brands and models, so check the individual specifications rather than assuming every zip and link mattress is built the same way.

Measure the route to your bedroom too. Check doorways, staircase width, landings, ceiling clearance and any tight turns. Easier handling is one of the main practical reasons for choosing a split setup.

Buying guidance for king size zip and link mattresses

A king size zip and link mattress can solve practical problems around comfort, access and guest-room flexibility. Understanding how the sections join and how the split setup affects everyday use will help you decide whether it is right for your bedroom.

What is a king size zip and link mattress and how does it work?

A king size zip and link mattress consists of two individual mattress sections designed to fasten securely together. On a standard 150 x 200cm king setup, each section is typically 75 x 200cm, although you should always confirm the individual product dimensions.

The zips run along the adjoining edges and hold the two mattresses closely together. They sit away from the main sleeping surface, while the mattress upholstery helps create a more continuous feel across the centre. You may still notice that the bed consists of two separate sections, particularly if you sleep directly over the join, and the exact feel varies by construction.

The benefits of zip and link beds for couples and guest rooms

For couples, separate mattress cores can reduce movement travelling directly across the sleeping surface. Selected models also offer split firmness, allowing each person to choose a more suitable comfort grade.

Guest rooms gain another advantage: flexibility. A compatible king setup can remain joined for couples or be separated into two individual sleeping surfaces when required.

Zip and link construction can also provide additional structure along the inner edges of each mattress. Where a model has reinforced sidewalls, these can help support the adjoining edges, although the exact level of centre support depends on the individual mattress design.

Choosing a mattress is easier when you know what to compare. Our product experts answer common questions about king size zip and link mattresses, including maintenance, bedding, size, warranties, and delivery.

Martin Seeley, Product Expert at MattressNextDay, answers questions about king size zip and link mattresses.

Can I use a king size zip and link mattress on a standard king bed frame?

Potentially, provided the complete joined mattress measures the correct size for your bed frame and the base offers suitable support.

For a standard UK king frame, the sleeping area is generally designed around a 150 x 200cm mattress. Check the internal dimensions of the frame and any mattress-support requirements before ordering. If you plan to separate the mattress sections regularly, you will also need suitable individual bases for each when they are used separately.

Can I combine two different mattress models to make a zip and link bed?

Usually, you should use mattress sections specifically designed to work together as a matching zip and link pair.

Two unrelated mattresses may differ in height, edge construction, fillings and zip positioning, even if their length and width appear compatible. This can create an uneven sleeping surface or prevent the zips from fastening correctly.

If you want different comfort levels on each side, look for a model that specifically offers split-tension or dual-firmness options rather than combining separate mattress ranges yourself.

What bedding should I use on a king size zip and link mattress?

When the mattresses are joined, you can usually treat the setup as one king size sleeping surface and choose bedding to match its overall dimensions.

For fitted sheets and mattress protectors, check:

      • The complete mattress width and length

      • The depth of the mattress

      • The pocket depth of the fitted sheet or protector

      • Whether you plan to separate the sections regularly

If you frequently use the mattresses apart, you may also need correctly sized individual sheets and protectors for each section.

Do I need a special mattress protector for a zip and link mattress?

Not necessarily. When the mattresses remain joined, a protector designed for the overall king size may be suitable, provided it fits the mattress depth correctly.

You may prefer separate protectors if you regularly split the mattresses or have different care requirements on each side. Always check the dimensions before buying, as fitted protectors need to sit securely without pulling the two sections out of alignment.

Can I rotate a king size zip and link mattress?

Many mattresses benefit from regular rotation, but the correct care routine depends on the individual model.

One practical advantage of a zip and link design is that the two mattress sections can be handled separately. Unzip them before rotating if the manufacturer's instructions recommend doing so, then reconnect them securely.

For split-tension mattresses, keep track of which section belongs to each sleeper so you do not accidentally swap the preferred firmness levels.

Can king size zip and link mattresses be flipped?

Only flip the mattresses if the manufacturer describes them as double-sided.

Many modern mattresses are designed with comfort layers on one side and should only be rotated. Others are made for use on both sides. Follow the product-specific care instructions for each section rather than assuming that every zip and link mattress needs the same maintenance.

How long should a king size zip and link mattress last?

There is no single lifespan that applies to every mattress. Longevity depends on construction quality, materials, frequency of use, sleeper weight, bed-base support and how well the mattress is maintained.

Some zip and link mattresses use reinforced edges or sidewalls around each individual section, which can provide additional structure around the centre join. Whether a particular mattress includes this feature should be confirmed in its specification.

Regular care in line with the manufacturer's instructions can also help encourage more even wear.

Do king size zip and link mattresses come with warranties?

Warranty or guarantee length varies by manufacturer and product. Premium ranges may include longer cover, but this should always be checked on the specific product page.

Look at both the warranty's length and its conditions. Some warranties have particular requirements around the bed base, mattress care or registration, so it is worth reading the terms rather than comparing only the number of years.

Can I get free next-day delivery on a king size zip and link mattress?

Free next-day delivery is available on eligible in-stock mattresses across the UK mainland. Zip and link mattresses can be more specialist than standard sizes, so availability may vary between products.

Check the individual mattress page before ordering to see the available delivery options. Weekend delivery may also be available on selected orders, and you can choose an appropriate delivery date at checkout where the service is offered.
