What is a rolled-up mattress?
Also known as beds-in-a-box and rollable mattresses, rolled mattresses are literally as they sound – they’re full-sized mattresses that have been carefully compressed, rolled, and packed into a much smaller box for nifty delivery and transportation.
Or to put it another way, rather than forcing an unwieldy mattress around any super-tight corners and narrow doorways, you just pick up the box, carry it to your room, unpack your new mattress, and let it expand – it’s that simple. Or, for ultimate convenience, you can opt for our Room of Choice delivery service, and we'll even take the boxed mattress right to your bedroom for you!
What are the different types of roll-up mattresses in the UK?
Due to advancements in mattress technology, it's possible to find most types of mattresses rolled and boxed. Most rolled-up mattresses are memory foam or latex, but you can find hybrid pocket-sprung rollable mattresses, too.
Here’s a breakdown of the three most common types:
Memory foam mattresses—rolled and vacuum packed, most modern memory foam mattresses are now delivered boxed. Unfolding fast, they fully expand in just a few hours.
Latex mattresses are made to mould to your body shape for perfect support. Boxed latex mattresses are very durable but can take up to 48 hours to settle into shape.
Hybrid mattresses—the most complex of the three rolled-up mattress types, roll-up hybrid mattresses provide excellent support. However, it may take upwards of 3 days for them to reach their maximum size and fill out completely.
Which mattress-in-a-box brands are available?
There are numerous different-priced mattress-in-a-box brands out there for you to choose from, but here at MattressNextDay, we work with some of the most well-known, including:
Are there any downsides to ordering a rolled-up mattress?
Despite being delivered fully boxed, a rollable mattress is more than capable of providing the same levels of support as a standard, non-rolled mattress. Carefully compressed to avoid damaging the material, your new mattress will remain fresh and untouched until you open its packaging.
However, because of the specialist machines needed to properly pack a rollable mattress, we do not recommend trying to re-box it after you’ve let it expand as this is likely to cause damage to your mattress filling and shape.
What is the best way to unpack a vacuum-packed mattress?
Roll-up mattresses are very easy to unpack – simply remove the protective packaging, place it on your bed, and let it settle for the manufacturer's recommended length of time before sleeping on it.
As for how long it takes memory foam mattresses to expand completely, this will depend entirely on brand and material, so make sure you check this before deciding on when to take your new bed for a spin, as lying on it too soon can cause damage or feel particularly uncomfortable.
How long do bed-in-a-box mattresses last?
Once unrolled, a bed in a box mattress will last as long as any other mattress type, so long as you take proper care of it. Rotate your new mattress regularly to avoid any lumps and bumps from forming and make use of a mattress topper to prolong its lifespan – with care, your rolled mattress should last between eight and ten years at a minimum.
Are there any environmental benefits to ordering rolled instead of standard options?
There are plenty of eco-benefits to choosing a roll-up mattress. For one thing, they take up less space in the delivery van, so more can be delivered in one go, reducing delivery attempts and fuel use.
Likewise, the plastic packaging used during vacuum packing is fully recyclable. Just look for recycling options available for plastic bottles, food bags, and bubble wrap, as our packaging will fall into the same category.
And if you are looking to get rid of your old mattress when ordering a new one, you can use our mattress recycling service to dispose of it, hassle-free!
