Why choose waterproof mattresses and bedding?
Waterproof bedding provides an extra barrier between everyday spills or moisture and your mattress, helping make bed care more manageable. It can be especially useful for:
Potty training: Protecting children's mattresses while accidents are still common.
Pet-friendly homes: Adding reassurance against muddy paws, spills and other mess.
Senior care: Making regular bed changes and cleaning more straightforward.
Night-time moisture: Helping protect the mattress from perspiration and dampness.
Everyday protection: Reducing the chance of drinks and accidental spills reaching the mattress itself.
How to choose the right waterproof mattress and bedding
Start by deciding whether you need a waterproof mattress or simply want to protect a mattress you already own. A waterproof or wipe-clean mattress has protection built into its construction, which can be useful where frequent cleaning is a priority. A separate waterproof mattress protector is easier to remove and wash, and can be replaced independently without changing the mattress.
For a protector, check all three mattress measurements: length, width and depth. A king size waterproof mattress protector, for example, also needs a sufficiently deep skirt to sit securely around your particular mattress.
Next, compare the sleeping surface. Bamboo and cotton blends can provide a softer fabric feel, while the waterproof protection usually comes from a separate membrane underneath. Some modern products use thin TPU membranes to create the waterproof barrier while reducing the heavy, plastic-like feel associated with older protectors. Product construction still varies, so check the specification rather than assuming every waterproof protector will feel or sound the same.
Finally, read the care instructions carefully. Waterproof membranes can have specific washing, drying and ironing requirements, so following the manufacturer's guidance helps protect their performance over time.

Buying guidance for waterproof mattresses and bedding
The right waterproof protection depends on how often you expect to clean it, whether you already have a mattress, and how important factors such as breathability and easy washing are to you.
Waterproof mattress vs. waterproof protector: Which do you need?
Waterproof mattress: Protection is built into the mattress or its outer surface. This can suit situations where regular wipe-clean care is important, but the protective layer cannot usually be removed and replaced as easily.
Waterproof mattress protector: Fits over an existing mattress and can normally be removed for washing. This gives you more flexibility and lets you replace the protector independently if it becomes worn.
For most everyday bedrooms, a separate protector can be the simpler option when the mattress itself is already comfortable and in good condition.
Understanding the materials: Choosing between bamboo, cotton and TPU barriers
Bamboo and cotton generally form the soft fabric layer you sleep above, while TPU, or thermoplastic polyurethane, can provide the waterproof barrier underneath.
For example, Panda®'s bamboo mattress protector combines a bamboo and cotton upper layer with a thin NanoTPU™ membrane. Panda® describes its own membrane as waterproof, quiet and ultra-thin, showing how modern waterproof protection can be designed without relying on a thick, rubbery surface.
These properties should still be checked product by product rather than assumed across all TPU protectors.
Noiseless and breathable protection for a cooler sleep
Waterproof does not automatically mean noisy or heavy. Thin membranes combined with breathable upper fabrics can create a softer and less noticeable sleep surface.
If you tend to sleep warm, focus on the complete construction rather than the waterproof layer alone. Look at the upper fabric, membrane and thickness together. Panda®, for example, combines its TPU barrier with a breathable bamboo-cotton surface designed to manage moisture and temperature.
Essential care and washing instructions for waterproof bedding
Always use the care label supplied with your protector. Washing or drying at temperatures above those recommended by the manufacturer can shorten the useful life of specialist materials.
As a practical example, Panda® advises washing its children's waterproof protector at up to 50°C, avoiding bleach and ironing, and preferably line-drying or tumble-drying only at a low temperature.
Avoid assuming that one washing routine suits every waterproof mattress protector. Check whether your particular product is machine washable, its maximum wash temperature and whether tumble drying is permitted before cleaning it.

Choosing a mattress is easier when you know what to compare. Our product experts answer common questions about waterproof mattresses and bedding, including suitability, maintenance, toppers, and delivery.
Martin Seeley, Product Expert at MattressNextDay, answers questions about waterproof mattresses and bedding.
Is waterproof the same as water-resistant?
No. Waterproof and water-resistant should not automatically be treated as interchangeable descriptions.
A waterproof product is designed to prevent liquid from passing through its protective barrier under the conditions specified by the manufacturer. A water-resistant product may provide some protection against moisture but may not be designed to stop liquid completely.
If spill protection is your priority, check that the individual product is specifically described as waterproof rather than relying on a general water-resistant claim.
Can I put a waterproof mattress protector over a mattress topper?
Often, yes, provided the protector is deep enough to fit securely over both the mattress and topper.
Measure the combined depth before ordering. If the fitted skirt is too shallow, it may pull away from the corners or sit too tightly.
Some protectors are specifically designed with deeper skirts, so you should check the exact dimensions of the product you are buying.
Should a waterproof mattress protector go under or over a topper?
The best arrangement depends on what you want to protect.
If protecting the mattress and topper together is your priority, a sufficiently deep waterproof protector can sit over both. If you want the topper to remain separate, check whether the protector can instead sit directly over the mattress without affecting the topper's intended setup.
Always follow the topper and protector manufacturers' instructions where they specify a particular arrangement.
How often should I replace a waterproof mattress protector?
There is no fixed replacement schedule that applies to every protector. Frequency of use, washing, drying and general wear all affect how long it remains suitable.
Regularly check for damage to the waterproof layer, stretched elastic, worn fabric or signs that liquid is beginning to pass through. If the barrier is damaged or no longer performs as intended, replacing the protector is more reliable than continuing to use compromised protection.
Do waterproof mattress protectors change how a mattress feels?
A protector adds another layer between you and the mattress, so some change in feel is possible. How noticeable it is depends on the thickness, materials and construction.
Thin fabric-and-membrane designs are intended to minimise that difference. If preserving the original mattress feel is particularly important, compare lightweight protectors and avoid unnecessarily bulky padding unless you also want to change the cushioning of the bed.
Is a waterproof mattress protector useful for pet owners?
It can provide an extra layer of protection where pets regularly use the bed. A waterproof barrier can help stop accidental moisture or spills reaching the mattress itself.
Look for a protector that can be removed easily for cleaning and fits securely enough not to shift as the pet moves around. You may also want to consider a washable top sheet or blanket for everyday hair and surface dirt.
Can waterproof bedding be used on children's beds?
Yes, waterproof protectors are commonly available for children's mattress sizes and can be useful during potty training or when drinks and other accidents are more likely.
Make sure the protector is the correct size and fits securely without loose fabric. Follow the individual washing instructions carefully, particularly when frequent cleaning is needed.
Panda®, for example, offers children's waterproof protectors with a TPU waterproof layer and provides specific washing and drying instructions for the product.
Does a waterproof mattress protector protect against allergens?
Waterproofing and allergen protection are separate product features. A waterproof membrane is primarily intended to block moisture, so you should not assume that every waterproof protector provides additional allergen protection.
Some models use fabrics or constructions marketed with additional hypoallergenic properties, but these claims should be checked on the individual product specification before buying.
