Dunlopillo - the top 6 questions
Dunlopillo mattresses have been an enduringly popular choice with people since their introduction in the 1920s. Their pioneering engineering approach and use of latex foam means they offer years of peaceful sleep when used. With the ability to hold their shape and provide protection from bacteria or mites, they are enjoyed by many people around the UK.
But what are the most important questions to ask if you have never used one before? We take a look at the top 3 below.
How long does a Dunlopillo mattress last?
The general guide from The Sleep Council is to change your mattress around every eight years to make sure it provides the best support and comfort. However, the latex material found in Dunlopillo mattresses is extra resilient, so they last longer than this. Naturally, this saves you money on the amount of mattresses you have to buy over the years. The best way to know when your mattress needs changing is if you no longer get a good night's sleep or you wake up with any stiffness in the morning.
Does the latex design make you too hot at night?
This is a very common misconception, but latex mattresses do not make you hotter at night. In fact, they perform better in this regard than memory foam mattresses. The reason is that the breathable nature of latex gives superb air circulation thus keeping you at an ideal temperature. The open cell structure of Dunlopillo latex mattresses also gives superior support when asleep due to the tiny air bubbles inside.
Are Dunlopillo mattresses made from 100% latex?
The mattresses in this range use a specially developed latex mix of 100% latex blended with varying levels of synthetic latex. This blend allows for optimum levels of comfort, support and tension when in use. Although Dunlopillo mattresses are not made totally from 100% natural latex, this is by far the biggest component in their manufacture.

Does my Dunlopillo mattress need a mattress protector?
Dunlopillo beds and mattresses from the Signature Collection are treated with Actipro - an all-natural pro-biotic technology. This has been designed specifically to help ensure cleanliness and as comfortable a night's sleep possible by eliminating dust mites, allergens, and odours. Not only are these things unclean, but they can also contribute to respiratory conditions such as asthma.
Washing the cover will lead to the Actipro treatment fading over time. As such, a mattress protector is recommended if you specifically want an additional layer between the cover and your bed sheet that you can wash. Note, however, that the protector must be a breathable one to ensure proper air circulation both in and around the latex mattress.
Will a Dunlopillo mattress work with my current base?
As 100% latex is used to manufacture all Dunlopillo mattresses, which are handmade in the UK. In short, yes you can use your current base for your new Dunlopillo mattress, but only if it's breathable. A base - like our slatted edge divan bases - that enables proper airflow through the base and into the mattress is necessary. Our slatted edge divan bases have been specifically designed to aid latex's natural breathable nature.
If a non-breathable base is used, it can lead to condensation forming on the bottom of the mattress, which will cause the latex to break down. Whichever base you use, from any manufacturer, the slats must be no more than 6cm apart. This prevents the mattress from sagging and allows it to provide proper support.
Is a soft, medium, or firm mattress right to help back pain?
There is no substitute for proper medical advice when it comes to back pain, so there is no simple answer. If you haven't yet consulted with a specialist, do so, and seek advice about the right mattress stiffness for your particular needs. Everyone's body's different, so, what works for the next person might not work for you. The old saying of a hard bed being best for your back isn't actually always true.
It's a good rule of thumb, however, that the more support you can get from your mattress the more comfortable night's sleep you'll have. The only option is to try a number of different mattresses and see which is right for you. Fortunately, we offer a free 24-hour delivery option, so it needn't be a time-consuming process.
